Guide to Maine Coast Festivals

The Yarmouth Clam Festival takes place on the third weekend of July. It is a 3-day event held annually since 1965. Aside from the rich variety of food, the festival offers different contests, such as a canoe race, a one-mile run for children, and a clam eating contest. You can watch fireworks on a Saturday evening, and there is a carnival that starts two days before the festival.

Having enjoyed a good portion of clams, we suggest you visit the Lobster Festival in Rockland. It is held annually from 1 to 5 of August offering great food, drinks, and fun activities. Aside from the fresh lobsters, you can enjoy entertaining performances from Maine artists and craftsmen, and take part in the cooking contest or go on an amusement ride.

Rockland has a two-day music festival, North Atlantic Blues Festival, held in the middle of July. Each year it gathers thousands of people who love blues, treated to a great lineup of famous bands and solo musicians.

Must See Locations in Maine Coast

Portland and Bar Harbor are definitely worth seeing at any point of the year. The Old Port district in Portland is a stunning piece of 19th-century history. The old fishing pier, restored old buildings, and cobblestoned road maintain a special atmosphere, while shops and restaurants make up for the entertainment. Fort Williams, a park in Cape Elizabeth, is littered with historic landmarks and sights, such as the abandoned Bunker Powerhouse, a number of batteries, and the Portland Head Light lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1791 and it is still operative, on par with the scenic view of the rocky coastline and a museum.

On the way to Bar Harbour, there is a beautiful park, called Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park, comprised of woodland and rocky shores. There are many hiking trails and viewing spots observing the ocean. There is also a multitude of small islands in the Casco Bay near Portland, some of which are worth checking out, like the Bailey Island.
